TANZANIA

One will be amazed by the natural wonders of Tanzania.  Located on the on the East Coast of Africa just south of the Equator, it not only has a pristine palm fringed coast line of 800 kilometres, but is famous for its culture, wildlife and the world-famous National Parks. The Maasai culture with their distinctive customs and dress is something not to be missed. The Hadzabe tribe are ancient hunters/gatherers that still live the traditional way of their ancestors.

Tanzania is the ‘’ cradle of mankind”. Oldupai Gorge, in northern Tanzania, is internationally recognized for famous discoveries of early humans and magnificent antiquities of the evolutionary history of our ancestors and the environments over the last two million years. It is here at Oldupai Gorge that Dr Louis and Dr Mary Leakey unearthed fossilised remains of Homo Habilis, the fore runner to modern mankind.

Dubbed as the ‘8th wonder of the world’ Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest inactive, intact and unfilled volcanic caldera. This country is also blessed with the highest freestanding mountain in the world – The Kilimanjaro which remains extremely popular with amateur and professional climbers from around the globe. Then there is Lake Victoria, Africa’s largest lake and the source of the Nile River, and Lake Tanganyika which is the deepest lake in Africa.  Zanzibar, the spice Island, is known for the beautiful beaches which have soft, white, untouched sands. The islands of Pemba and Mafia are well known for deep sea fishing.

But it is the Serengeti ecosystem that is the pride of Tanzania. The Serengeti spans approximately 30,000 km2 (12,000 sq. mi) and hosts the annual wildebeest migration, a phenomena that is world famous and considered to be one of the ten natural wonders of Africa. The Serengeti is most probably richest reservoir of wildlife the world has ever known. Each year around the same time, great migration by some 265,000 zebra and 1.7 million wildebeest follows the rain-ripened grass from Southern Tanzania and crosses into Kenya. The crossings at the Grumeti and Mara rivers offer the most incredible sightings.
