The name of the country is derived from the Namib Desert, considered to be the oldest desert in the world. Namib means ‘vast place’ and originates from Nama. Namibia is a country of contrasts and natural beauty beyond expectation.

Namibia’s western border is the Atlantic Ocean. In the north are Zambia and Angola, in the east is Botswana and in the south-east is South Africa. Because of its unique location between the 2 major deserts, the Namib and the Kalahari, the country has the least amount of rainfall of any country in sub-Saharan Africa.

Its unique German character remains visible in the architecture and the road signs with many historical German names, the food and the prevalent use of the language throughout the country. Namibia’s local tribes are varied and range from the nomadic Himba tribe through to the Herero, the ladies known for their beautiful colourful dresses inspired by the colonial German fashion of the time and the elaborate headdress.

Scenery in Namibia is, in one word, spectacular!   Fish River Canyon, the second largest canyon in the world (after Grand Canyon of USA), offers thrilling hiking trails that are quite popular with the tourists. In the south is Sossusvlei’s sand dunes, the best-known attraction of the country. The dunes in this area are some of the highest in the world, reaching almost 400 meters (1,300 ft.), and provide photographic enthusiasts with wonderful images in the beautiful morning and evening light. The dramatic coastline of the Skeleton Coast littered with shipwrecks. Interestingly enough, the phrase Skeleton Coast was the title of John Henry Marsh’s famous book chronicling the shipwreck of the Dunedin Star.

Namibia’s Etosha National Park is also one the most unique in all Africa. The excessively large Etosha salt pan, the park’s main characteristic, is home to abundant wildlife. This malaria-free national park is one of the most accessible game reserves in all of Southern Africa.

Whether joining a guided tour, a fly-in safari or a fly-drive, Namibia is must-discover.
