An Experience of Southern Italy Naples – Sorrento – Amalfi Coast – Alberobello – Bari – Naples
Experience 7 Nights – 8 Days: 3 nights in Sorrento, 2 nights in Alberobello, 2 nights in Naples
Arrive at Aeroporto Internazionale di Napoli, (official name: Ugo Niutta) in Naples and pick up your rental car. Then drive south, paralleling the coast, past Mount Vesuvius, to your hotel in Sorrento. Don’t worry, you’ve not missed the volcano. You’ll be back tomorrow!
After breakfast you’re off to explore Pompeii, the famous Roman city that was destroyed by an eruption of Vesuvius in 79AD. After visiting the excavations enjoy lunch at one of the excellent local restaurants. In the afternoon, you’re back to Mount Vesuvius, itself, where you can enjoy a two-hour (but not arduous) round-trip climb to the top to peer into the impressive crater and admire spectacular views over the Gulf of Naples. Exhilarated by your day, you’re back to your hotel for some well-earned relaxation.
Today’s a day to relax. Enjoy your time sunning on the beach or pop over to Positano to wander through the shops along the characteristic small streets. After a nice lunch, before returning to your hotel, we suggest continuing along the coast to Amalfi and Ravello to take in the dramatic cliffs and scenery.
Breakfast completed, you depart for Matera, City of the Sassi, a Unesco World Heritage site. Anyone who sees Matera cannot help but be awe-struck, it’s so expressive and touching in its sorrowful beauty. We suggest a stop at one of the typical Agriturismo, where you can lunch on the flavourful cheeses and salami produced in this area, before returning satisfied in body and soul, to your hotel in Alberobello (1 hour drive).
After breakfast might be a bit early to have wine, but this is Italy! Take a fifteen-minute drive to the Cantina Sociale in Locorotondo, listed as one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, to sample the best wines of Apulia, typical of this area and very famous worldwide. After lunch, before arriving back at your hotel, tour around Alberobello, known internationally for its typical houses in Trulli style: traditional Apulian dry stone huts with conical roofs. You can also visit the Castellana Grotto, with its amazing stalactites and stalagmites.
After breakfast, drive along the east coast to Bari. Here you can visit the famous San Nicola Cathedral, built between 1087 and 1197, and the San Sabino Cathedral, constructed in the majestic Apulian Romanesque style, both located in the old town. In the early afternoon, continue over to Caserta, to visit the fabulous, Versailles-like Royal Palace of Caserta (Reggia di Caserta), a UNESCO World heritage Site since 1997. With 1,200-plus rooms it was the largest palace and one of the largest buildings erected in 18th century Europe.
(Please check entrance and exit times on the internet beforehand: http://www.reggiadicaserta.beniculturali.it/).
You’ll leave totally awed for the short drive to your hotel in Naples.
Today, you’ll enjoy your free-time in Naples for a panoramic city tour including Mergellina, Castel dell’ Ovo: The Royal Palace, used by the Bourbon Kings during their rule of the Kingdom of Two Sicilies (1730-1860), and Spaccanapoli: as the main promenade for tourists it provides access to a number of important sights of the city. With all your activity, don’t forget to take in some last-minute shopping!
You return to the Aeroporto di Napoli, and drop off your car; your heart filled with lifetime experiences; your camera with phenomenal photos – and – you’ve posted some awesome selfies!
